ANCIENT ROMAN REPUBLIC
SILVER DENARIUS OF ARMORED WARRIOR ON GALLOPING HORSE
WITH SHIELD AND SPEAR COIN PENDANT
IN 14K YELLOW GOLD
113 B.C.
This remarkable
antiquity from the early days of the Roman Republic is an excellent
example of the classic art style that dominated this magnificent ancient
empire. The coin is in excellent preservation and is a silver denarius
with a stunning reverse side shown of a Roman warrior in full battle
armor galloping at full speed with shield and spear raised ready to
engage an enemy. Beneath is the inscription ROMA which gave honor
to Rome, the center of one of the greatest Empires that ever existed.
The last photo shows the other side of the coin and back of the pendant
(not meant to be worn outward) which depicts a stunning helmeted profile
of the goddess Roma, the patron god of the Empire. It was a hard
decision for me to pick which side to mount outward for wear but
equestrian-themed jewelry is rare in ancient coins and accounts for one
of my most requested topics depicted in the ancient art of the coins.
This pendant cannot be worn on either side but if they buyer wishes, I
can switch the coin so that the head of Roma faces out.
The action imparted to the
scene is magnificent and the detail is remarkable. It was not
until the fourth century A.D. that riders used stirrups and here, you
can clearly see the rider's feet dangling freely! The shield is
large and the lance being held is extremely long, a historical insight
to actual weapons used as well as typical battle gear used in that day. The coin has a
beautiful dark age tone to the background which highlights the exquisite
detail of the coin.
This coin is classic
ancient Rome and is a superb example of ancient Roman art. The
ancient silver of the coin possesses a high luster and makes for a gorgeous and rich
contrast with the 14 karat yellow gold setting pendant setting in which it
is mounted. The ancient key pattern design in the gold wonderfully
compliments this genuine ancient coin. Overall, a stunning genuine Roman antiquity from
the early Roman Empire!
Overall diameter is 27 mm,
about the size between a U.S. quarter and 50 cent piece. The coin
itself is about the size of a U.S. penny.
