ITALIAN
EMPRESS WITH ELEGANT ANCIENT ROMAN HAIR STYLE ROMAN COIN PENDANT IN
14KY GOLD
248
A.D.
This beautiful ancient
coin from the days of the Roman
Empire is an excellent example of classic art in the ancient world. This is a high grade authentic Roman silver
antoninianus coin of the empress Otacilia Severa, the wife of emperor
Philip I. It was minted in Rome during the rule of her husband in
248 A.D.. The coin is a large fine example with a very well-centered
strike and detail. The
high-polished 14 karat yellow gold open drop pendant features large and
bold polished surfaces which contrasts well with the
bright silver of the ancient coin.
History
tells us very little about Otacilia
Severa, the wife
of Philip I. In A. D. 237, she gave birth to a son who later became
the emperor Philip II. Recorded history from about 222 A.D. onward
is highly scarce and no reliable accounts of the events of this time
period have been discovered. One event is generally accepted by
historians. Otacilia
Severa held her son Philip
II as he died, murdered by the Praetorian Guard in 249 A.D. near Rome or
Verona. Her demise is a mystery as she too, was either killed or
permitted to live the remaining years of her life in seclusion and sadness
having lost both her husband, Philip I and her son Philip II at the hand
of aspiring Trajan
Decius.
A fascinating artifact
of history!
Overall
dimensions without the bail are an impressive 38 mm x 28mm.
