ANCIENT GREEK SILVER HORSE COIN PENDANT
IN
14KY GOLD
350 - 340 B.C.
Equestrian themes in ancient
coins are extremely popular and sought after by collectors. This
remarkable coin is a GENUINE ancient Greek silver drachm showing a
feisty horse crouching and ready to spring forward. This is the
reverse side mounted outward in this classy, high-polished 14K yellow
gold pendant. The ancient Greek artistic style of the horse has
been rendered in a most beautiful manner. The darkened silver
patina in the background contrasts well with the bright yellow gold of
the setting. This is an ancient silver coin minted in the 4th
century B.C. in the city of Larissa from ancient Thessaly in Greece.
The other side (not shown or made to be worn outward) shows the head of
the Greek mythological nymph Larissa. This is one of the most
artistically attractive ancient coin pendants we have done with a horse
theme and one of the few from Ancient Greece. The style of the
horse is a classic image for ancient times. Our requests for
horse-themed jewelry far exceeds the pieces we offer so grab this one
quick if you find it speaks to you! Very highly recommended for
the equestrian enthusiast! This is one piece that will be the talk
of any gathering where it is worn. Certainly, you wouldn't have to
worry about someone else showing up with one like it! A
one-of-a-kind masterpiece of modern jewelry craftsmanship and authentic
ancient Greek art.
In Greek mythology Larissa was a NAIAD nymph.
The Naiads were nymphs who lived in and took care of springs, rivers and
fountains in the ancient world. Larissa was a lover of Poseidon
who gave birth to three sons, Achaios, Phthios, and Pelasgus.
Silver ancient Greek drachm coins minted by the city of Larissa between
400 BC and at least 340 BC show an obverse side with the face of
Larissa. She is displayed as a three-quarters face with wild
flowing hair. This style was copied from the head of Arethusa by
Cimon, depicted on Syracusan tetradrachms. According to hoards of
these coins found in Thessaly, this coinage was produced down to 320 BC.
Other coins depict Larissa seated, holding a hydria and with a spring
nearby, confirming her status as a Naiad nymph.
Overall
diameter is 22 mm.
