CHRISTIAN ROMAN COIN PENDANT FEATURING EMPEROR MAURICE TIBERIUS
IN 14KY GOLD
582
- 602 A.D.
Struck
under the rule of emperor Maurice Tiberius, this beautiful and highly
defined large bronze half folles coin features a most impressive
dark-hued patina
that really accentuates the fine detail of this artifact from the
Christian Roman Byzantine Empire. The rich shades of dark brown contrast wonderfully with the bright high polish of the 14K yellow gold
setting. This is a very large authentic ancient bronze coin at
25 mm, about the size of a U.S. quarter. The
Byzantine folles coin shown above features a superbly struck design with a
superb and rare portrait of the emperor facing the viewer. The
folles was a standard of Roman Byzantine currency similar to the dollar
to US currency. One folles was equal to 40 nummi in the Byzantine
monetary system. This coin was a half-folles, representing 20
nummi. It is not common knowledge that the Roman Empire continued
on for another 1000 years in the East as the Christian Byzantine Empire
after its fall in the West. This was a fantastic period of
splendor and unique melding of East and Western cultures. This is
a spectacular and rare wearable artifact from this famous time.
Prior to his ascension to the throne, Maurice Tiberius was a decorated
military commander who served under the emperor Justin II. He is
best known for this victories in controlling the Persians. Justin
II was the nephew of the famous ruler Justinian. Justin was
selected to take over the throne prior to his uncle's death. His
grasp of effective rule was no match for the great accomplishments of
his uncle Justinian. Justinian, one of the greatest rulers of the
Byzantine Empire, was most famously known for his
architectural achievement of the construction of the great church of St.
Sophia in Constantinople, still standing today in modern Istanbul, Turkey.
A
sizable and very highly
recommended piece. Overall diameter is 28 mm.
