GRADE LARGE BYZANTINE ROMAN "M" FOLLES ANASTASIUS I COIN PENDANT
IN 14KY GOLD
491
- 518 A.D.
Struck under the rule of
Anastasius I from
491-518 A. D.. Minted in Constantinople, the reverse is shown
with the prominent 'M' which is the Greek letter numeral for 40.
Greek, not Roman numerals were used on Byzantine Roman coins.
The
Byzantine folles coin shown above features a superbly struck reverse
design with the classic 'M' which stood for the Greek number 40, the
monetary units that the folles was worth. One folles was equal to 40
nummi in the Byzantine monetary system. This is a very large authentic ancient bronze coin at
28 mm, just under the size of a U.S. silver dollar.
This is a
very rare quality
bold folles coin from Anastasius I. Most examples are in far
poorer grade with bad detail. This coin features not only very
prominent, unworn detail, but also a superb natural two-tone earthen
patina which really brings out the artwork on the coin. A
fantastic piece for someone whose name starts with the initial 'M' or
someone who has just turned 40, as well as anyone who desires a truly
unique work of ancient art and history. The emperor Anastasius I was
best known for building up the economic strength of the Byzantine
Empire. A
sizable and very highly
recommended piece.
Fine grade Anastasius folles
coins have skyrocketed in value recently. This example is of an
extremely rare quality for an Anastasius I Folles!!! Overall diameter is
28 mm.
