ANCIENT GREEK COIN RING OF NYMPH
IN
14KY GOLD
3RD
CENTURY BC
From
the ancient Greek Island of Euboia, this is one of the finest struck and
detailed examples of these scarce coins I have seen yet. The reverse
is shown and depicts the nymph Histatia, partially nude seated on the prow
of a naval fighting ship holding the mast, honoring the naval strength of
the island.
The
obverse has the head of Maenad wearing a vine wreath.
The Maenads were companions
of Dionysus and were notorious for their wild orgies along with their
ecstatic singing and dancing. The grape vine wreath symbolizes their
drunken revelry. The
coins were initially minted to celebrate the defeat of the Philistides in
340 BC.
Not only is
this coin a true work of ancient art but the modern gold ring is of such a
distinctive and ancient-like style, that the two are perfect companions
creating this superb masterpiece of ancient coin jewelry.
