MAGNIFICENT STAG DEER 1000 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE EMPIRE ANCIENT ROMAN COIN PENDANT

IN 14K YELLOW GOLD

247 - 248 A.D.

This remarkable ancient Roman silver coin commemorates a spectacular celebration event in Roman ancient history.  It features a perfectly preserved large stag deer, an exotic wild animal to the ancient Romans and a representative of power and prowess in the animal kingdom.  The teardrop high polished 14K yellow gold pendant mounting handsomely showcases this beautiful and unique ancient artifact.  The detail on the stag is so fine that the lines of hair on the body can even be seen!  Unlike the ancient Greek coins of earlier times, depiction of wild animals on Roman coins was much more rare.  This is a highly aesthetic and unique wearable piece of genuine ancient art.

The coin featured here was minted under the rule of Philip I who, in 248 A.D., called for a magnificent celebration of the 1000 year anniversary of the founding of Rome.  The commemoration's highlight of this once-in-several-lifetimes holiday was the presentation of the Saecular Games and Philip ordered one of the most spectacular series of public games that the Romans had ever seen.  Thousands of wild and exotic animals from all over the Empire were brought into the  Circus Maximus where the event was held.  These beasts were not brought for display but were brought to be active participants in combat either against one another or against human opponents.  The games of combat also included thousands of gladiators who fought and died in land battles as well as recreated naval battles where the entire Circus arena floor was flooded and fighting ships were used in the display.  The exact duration of the celebration is not recorded, but it could have been a month long event or even spread out longer over several periods.  A variety of these unusual silver antoninianus coins were minted to memorialize the celebration where many of the different wild beasts that were brought into the arena were featured on the reverse side of these coins.

Overall dimensions are 45 mm high by 28 mm wide.
