FINEST GRADE ANCIENT ROMAN VICTORY ANGEL CLAUDIUS GOTHICUS COIN PENDANT

IN 14KY GOLD

268 - 270 A.D.

Exquisite!!!  This is clearly, one of if not THE finest Victory Angel Roman coins we have ever used as a feature coin for jewelry.  It shows a perfect and immaculately preserved angel advancing right holding a crowning wreath.  The rich patina of this ancient bronze Roman coin wonderfully contrasts with the 14K yellow gold wreath design polished pendant setting in which it is mounted.  You can ask for no finer Roman angel coin than this!!!  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED and rare in this quality.

This coin was issued under the rule of Claudius Gothicus who was a great military general – emperor.  Born in 214 A.D. in Illyricum as Marcus Aurelius Claudius, he later become known as ‘Gothicus’ for his sound defeat of the Goth uprisings that had been a thorn in the side of the Roman Empire.  He was party to the murder of Emperor Gallienus while serving as his deputy commander and chief-of-staff in the army.  Upon Gallienus’ death, he was elevated to Augustus.  Within short time, the Goths attacked in the Balkans and Claudius wanting to eliminate this menace led an army to the region.  Despite the much larger Goth force, Claudius brutally defeated their army and put an end to their advances for 110 years!

Claudius was also a great diplomat.  At the start of his reign, Spain had previously split from the Roman Empire.  Claudius Gothicus succeeded in getting Spain to rejoin after a Roman army defeated an attempted secession by the Gauls from Spain.  The popular Claudius was one of the few emperors during this period to die a "natural" death.  He died of the plague in Illyricum near the ancient town of Sirmium in A. D. 270.  This terrible disease had claimed the life of the Roman emperor just as it had so many millions of Romans before him and would continue to devastate mankind throughout over a thousand years of European history to come.

A wonderful and important artifact from this ancient culture.  The coin is well-centered and of the finest detail and patina.  Very classy!!!

Overall diameter of 22 mm, about the size of a US nickel.
