TINY ANCIENT ROMAN COIN CHRISTIAN CROSS COIN PENDANT
IN
14KY GOLD
WITH STERLING SILVER DECORATION
5TH CENTURY A.D.
With its
fine detail and multi-hued patina, this is a
small but beautifully preserve bronze coin from the early days
of the Christian Roman Empire. This coin was minted under the later lineage of
Constantine the Great, the first ruler of the Roman Empire to convert to
Christianity. The reverse has been featured on the display side of
this custom hand-made coin pendant. A cross is shown in the center
of a wreath of victory. The setting is a two-tone custom pendant
made of high polished 14K yellow gold with a twisted wire sterling
silver wreath decoration wrapped around the gold. The pendant setting
showcases the ancient patina color wonderfully and shows of the finely
detailed cross with excellent visibility and aesthetics.
Constantine the Great was
encamped with his army at the Milvian Bridge, heavily outnumbered by the
armies of his challenger Maxentius, across the river. While
Constantine prayed to one of his gods, he and many of his army troops who
were with him, reported seeing a vision in the heavens above the sun of a
trophy with a cross at its top and light surrounding it.
Simultaneously, they all heard a voice say, "Conquer by
This." Immediately,
Constantine placed the sign of Christ on his standards and had it painted
on his shields. Constantine won the day with a decisive victory and
Maxentius, thrown from the Milvian Bridge, was drowned when the weight of
his armor caused him to sink into the mud and ooze at the bottom of the
River Tiber. His body was recovered the day after the battle.
From this point on, Christianity became the official religion of the
Empire and the capitol was moved from Rome to Constantinople (modern day
Istanbul, Turkey).
Upon the death of
Constantine the Great in 337 A.D., the Empire was divided among his three
sons. The eldest son, Constantine II, took most of the Western
Europe, the second son, Constantius II, received the entire Eastern Empire
and the youngest Constans, ruled Italy and North Africa under the regency of
Constantine II.
A wonderful and important artifact from this ancient
culture.
