LARGE ROMAN COIN PENDANT FROM THE PERIOD OF DECLINE OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE IN
14KY GOLD
309 - 313 A.D.
This is a
large and substantial high grade ancient Roman coin minted at the onset
of the fall of the Roman Empire. The 14KY gold pendant features a
bronze follis of Maximinus Daia when he served as Augustus between 309 and 313 A.D.. It is an impressive and
exquisitely preserved genuine ancient bronze follis of one of Rome's
emperors who began service as a Caesar after the resignation of
Diocletian and Maximianus. The
beautiful classic Roman ancient art style is perfectly captured in this
bold side profile.
A heavy and highly prized
dark green patina covers the coin which is set in a high polished 14K yellow gold
setting, beautifully complimenting coin's rich hue.
For decades, the well-disciplined Roman army held the
barbarians of Germany back along the the Rhine-Danube frontier.
Finally, in the 3rd century A. D., a civil war broke out in Italy and
the Roman military was called from the northern boundaries to fight the
civil war at home. Such action left this Roman border vulnerable
to attack and eventually, Germanic tribes from the north overran the
region and subsequently moved to overtake Roman lands in Greece and Gaul
(France). During this time, the Roman Empire had been split into
two separate monarchies - East and West. The Christian conversion
of Constantine and focus on the new capitol Constantinople in the East,
the West was fast losing focus and power. In 476 A. D., the
Germanic warlord Odacer (aka Odovacar) overthrew the last of the West
Roman Emperors, Augustulus Romulus. From that point, the western
half of the Empire was ruled by the Germanic barbarians and west Roman
infrastructure crumbled. Roads and bridges were left in disrepair
and fields left untilled. The lack of a standing, organized
military and administration made travel unsafe in the region due to
pirates and bandits. Without working farms, trade disappeared and
no longer could businesses survive to support the west Roman cities.
What was unthinkable just a couple of centuries earlier had finally come
to pass - the splendor and might of Rome was no more.
A wonderful and important artifact from ancient
history.
Overall
diameter is impressively large at 26 mm.
