Born in Italica, Spain on January
24th in 76 A.D., Hadrian only 10 years old when his father died and was
subsequently placed under the ward of Trajan. In 117
A.D., the emperor Trajan died of a sudden illness while on his way to crush some revolting
provinces of the Empire. On his death bed, he adopted Hadrian as his son and
successor to the throne. This tradition of an emperor selecting a
capable individual and adopting him as his son to succeed his rule, served
to provide peaceful succession of power in the Empire and was continued
for the next 80 years.
History remembers Hadrian as a man
of extraordinary talents, certainly one of the most gifted that Rome
ever produced. Prior to entering public service as a legionary
commander, he received an excellent classical education in Rome.
In 113 A.D., he was appointed to govern Syria. As emperor,
Hadrian was a prominent patron of sports and
the arts, as well as showing a strong interest in architecture. He
was directly responsible for the development of many fine buildings and
structures during his reign. Hadrian also possessed a love of
Greek culture and he is often portrayed in statues and on coins with a
full beard, which at the time of his reign was a Greek Custom, most
Roman Men preferring to be clean shaven.
By the time Hadrian became Emperor
in 117 AD the Roman Empire had ceased to expand. Hadrian wanted to
define and protect the Empire's boundaries.
A major portion of his reign was spent on tours of
inspection in the provinces, and his personal presence among the border
troops served to assure their loyalty.
A region of problems and uprisings, he visited Britain in 122 A.D.
and ordered a wall to be built between the Solway Firth in the West and
the River Tyne in the east "to separate Romans from Barbarians".
This monumental ancient construction project is referred to as
"Hadrian's Wall" and is still standing today, preserved as a World
Heritage Site.
Hadrian died on July 10, 138 A.D.
at his Imperial Villa at Baiae, on the Bay of Naples.
