aesthetic and unique.
This Greek coin was minted in
Carthage, the ancient Phoenician and later Greek city-state in North
Africa. The patron and chief deity of the colony was Tanit, a
lunar goddess and a mother goddess known to bestow fertility.
Tanit was the name given by the
Carthaginians also to the moon which transforms its face from pale to
bright to invisible as it moves through the lunar phases. The
multi-personality of the moon also was personified in Tanit. She
represented Love and Death, Creation and Destruction, Tenderness and
Cruelty, Protection and Betrayal. The glyphic symbol drawn in
ancient times to represent her was an equilateral triangle with a
horizontal line and a disc, resembling an abstract female human figure.
Numerous statuettes of Tanit have been found which represent her naked
with her hands squeezing her breast or holding a baby. Such a
symbol and the statuettes were not only an artistic-religious
expressions, but were shown in the houses as symbol of fertility.
A true masterpiece
combination of fine jewelry craftsmanship and GENUINE ancient art!
HIGHLY recommended and one of a kind.
