FOLLES COIN PENDANT
IN
STERLING SILVER / 18KY GOLD
Wrapped in Sterling and 18KY gold, this ancient
bronze Byzantine folles coin dates back to the rule of Anastasius I from
491-518 A. D. Minted in Constantinople, the reverse is shown
with the prominent 'M' which is the Greek letter numeral for 40 (yes,
Greek, not the Roman letter numeral). This coin
represented their basic denomination of 40 nummi, considered one folles. Surrounding the coin is a heavy hand-wrought setting in sterling silver with 18KY gold accents.
This
has to be one of the largest and most stately pieces I've made in ancient
coin jewelry, measuring 2.5" in total height and 1.5"
across. A great piece for someone whose name begins with 'M' as well
as anyone who desires a truly unique work of art and history. The emperor Anastasius I was best known
for building up the economic strength of the Byzantine Empire. An
absolutely remarkable masterpiece.
