ROMAN
VICTORY ANGEL COIN PENDANT
IN
14KY GOLD
The thought-provoking reverse
of this ancient bronze Roman coin shows a victory angel lifting a wreath
to be placed on a Roman soldier's head. From the rule of Constantine
the Great, the
first Christian Roman emperor, this coin dates back to the 4th century
AD.
Greatly outnumbered by a enemy army, Constantine had a vision
the night before the battle of
an angel in the sky holding the Chi-Ro (an ancient Christian symbol) that appeared to him and led him to victory.
That day, the miraclulous vision came true and immediately after, his conversion to Christianity. This conversion
was memorialized on many of the coins minted by him and his
descendants. It is called the "victory angel" because of Constantine's vision of this angel precluding his miraculous
victory. This gorgeous example with its rare and choice
tapioca-colored patina shows the angel
of victory holding the crowning wreath. Beautifully set in a 14KY
gold victory wreath setting with an overall diameter of 17 mm.
