Many
years ago, I had a gallery in North Carolina. One day, a gentleman walked in and
commissioned me for some design work. In the course of that time, we
became good friends. Before the import ban in 1986, he used to be a big
ivory dealer in the States and still had a substantial collection that he didn't
know what to do with. He was short on cash and needed help. I wasn't
sure what I was getting into with all the "political correctness" in
the world but I wanted to help my friend so I purchased his entire
inventory.
Intimidated, I
initially only put a few pieces out in my gallery and they all immediately sold
with not one complaint. I was actually amazed by everyone telling me that
they love ivory and really want to have a piece because it's so rare and
beautiful. For the next several years after that time, out of many dozens
of pieces sold, I only had two misguided people even mention their dislike for
ivory. Unfortunately, I'm sure they took unfair advantages with animal
life by eating and wearing animal by-products. Furthermore, they
shamelessly contributed to the destruction of the ozone layer by driving an
automobile and carelessly used products like toilet paper and writing paper made from
valuable trees. Actually, if they approached the subject from an educated
perspective, they would discover that in most of the southern African countries
for example, the elephant populations are so over-crowed that the herds are
devouring the rainforests at a record pace thereby posing a direct threat to the
lands' deforestation.
This has been happening to such a serious degree
that the governments have been culling the herds each year to manage the
over-population. Enough said.

I have a VERY
limited number of pieces left. Since 1986, it has been illegal to IMPORT
any ivory into the United States. Only pieces that have been in the
country since that time can be bought and resold. As if that's not enough
to motivate you, the collection I purchased is of the absolute finest quality of
African tusk ivory I have ever seen! This gentleman had a partner that
would bring the best tusks from Africa to the Orient and have only the most
skilled carvers turn them into the works of art that they are. Only the
best would do. If you ever want to see what all the desire for ivory has
been about since ancient times, you have to see the quality of this
material. Held under a light or out in the sun, the unique cross-hatched
iridescent grain that is only found in fine ivory is fascinating and unlike
anything you'll ever see. Once I sell out of the few pieces I have left
there will be no more. If you are a collector of the unusual, a
speculator of a potential great investment or just plain wanting something that
is cool and rare, this is it!!!!
One more
thing. Since everything was carved in the Orient and Oriental women are
petite, the bangles are for small hands only. Although, I have sold as many
bangles to men for investment and collections, as women, just remember they run
a little smaller than typical Western sizes.
